What We Look At

We do not rank casinos or sportsbooks, and we never will. Rankings go out of date quickly and too often reflect who paid the most rather than who deserves a place. What we can offer instead is the checklist we use whenever we write about a game or a type of platform. You can use the same questions yourself, wherever you live and whatever you play, as long as you are an adult and the activity is legal for you.

When we look at a game

Is the maths visible?

A well-made slot or table game tells you its return to player, explains its volatility in some form, and lays out the pay table in full. If you have to hunt for that information, or it is missing entirely, that is a mark against it. Our guide to how slot machines work explains why those figures matter.

Are the rules complete?

We read the help screen from top to bottom. Does it explain what happens if a connection drops mid-spin? Are bonus features and jackpot triggers described in plain words? Are any stake-dependent rules, such as a jackpot only being available at certain bet sizes, made clear before you play?

Does the presentation stay honest?

Celebrations for "wins" that return less than the stake, constant near-miss animations and countdown timers designed to rush you are all things we note. Fun design is welcome; design that blurs what is actually happening is not.

When we look at a platform

When an article discusses online casinos, sweepstakes sites or sportsbooks in general, these are the questions we ask:

  1. Licensing and location. Does the site clearly state who runs it and under which licence, and does it block players from places where it is not permitted?
  2. Age checks. Is verification required before real money or prize redemptions are involved?
  3. Terms in plain language. Are bonus conditions, withdrawal or redemption rules and fees easy to find and understand?
  4. Player tools. Can you set deposit limits, take a time-out or self-exclude without having to argue with anyone?
  5. Support. Is there a real way to ask a question and get a direct answer?
  6. Data care. Does the privacy policy say what is collected and why, in readable terms?

Red flags we always mention

  • Promises of guaranteed wins or "risk-free" betting.
  • Bonuses that sound enormous but hide very high wagering requirements.
  • No visible information about the company or its licence.
  • Pressure to deposit more, such as frequent messages after a loss.
  • Withdrawal processes that suddenly become complicated.

Our article on how scam sites lure users with promotions shows how several of these tend to appear together.

What none of this can tell you

Even the most transparent game keeps a house edge, and even the best-run platform makes its money from players losing over time. A good score on this checklist means a product is easier to understand and less likely to trick you; it does not mean you will win. Set your budget first, and use these questions to make sure the place you spend it is playing straight with you.

Our routine

How we look at a game before writing about it

The same four passes, every time, whatever the theme or brand.

  1. Open the info screen

We look for the return figure, volatility hints and the full pay table.

  2. Read every rule

Feature triggers, stake-dependent prizes and disconnection rules all get noted.

  3. Watch the presentation

We flag celebrations for losing spins and timers that try to hurry you.

  4. Check the player tools

Limits, reminders and exclusion options should be easy to reach.
