A free spins round is a bonus feature inside a slot that plays a set number of spins without taking a stake for each one. The spins run at the bet level that triggered the round, often with special rules that make them different from ordinary play. Most rounds begin when three or more scatter symbols land, and many can be extended, or "retriggered", by landing scatters again during the round.
Note that this is the in-game feature, not the promotional free spins that operators hand out with wagering conditions attached. The two share a name and very little else.
Getting in: the triggers
- Scatters. The classic route: a set number of scatter symbols anywhere on the grid, regardless of paylines.
- Reel-specific symbols. Some games need bonus symbols on particular reels, such as one, three and five.
- Collection meters. A bar fills as certain symbols land over many spins and opens the round when full.
- Random triggers. The round starts after any spin with no visible cause.
- Paying more. An ante surcharge raises the trigger rate, covered in our explainer on ante bets in slots, and some games sell entry to the round outright at a multiple of the stake.
What changes once the round starts
Free spins rarely play exactly like the base game. Designers use the round to deliver a concentrated slice of the game's return, usually through one or more modifiers:
| Modifier | What it does |
|---|---|
| Different reel strips | The reels carry more premium symbols or more wilds than in the base game |
| Multipliers | Wins are multiplied by a fixed or growing amount |
| Sticky wilds | Wilds stay in place for the rest of the round |
| Expanding symbols | A chosen symbol grows to fill its reel, as in book slots |
| Extra rows or reels | The grid grows and stays larger until the round ends |
| Collect features | A collector symbol gathers values shown on other symbols |
Some games let the player choose between options before the round begins, such as more spins with a lower multiplier or fewer spins with a higher one. The choices are usually balanced to have a similar average value and differ mainly in how swingy they are.
Retriggers explained
A retrigger happens when the trigger condition is met again during the round. The usual reward is more spins added to the counter, though the rules vary:
- some games award the same number of spins as the original trigger;
- some award fewer, for example a handful of extra spins rather than a full new set;
- some add a multiplier step or a new modifier instead of, or as well as, more spins;
- some cap the total number of spins a round can reach.
The help screen lists the specifics. If a round seems to end abruptly after a retrigger, a cap is the usual reason.
Are free spins really free?
Within a session, the spins cost nothing at the moment they play. In the bigger picture, their value is funded by the base game. The average contribution of the round is already part of the published return to player, and in volatile games a large share of the total return can sit inside the feature. That is why the base game often feels lean: it is paying for the round in advance.
It also explains why a free spins round can finish with less than the cost of the spins it took to trigger it. That outcome is common and entirely normal.
Set the stake before the trigger
Because the round plays at the bet level that triggered it, the stake cannot be raised mid-feature. Choosing a stake that suits the session budget from the outset matters more than any decision inside the round.
Common questions
Can I see how often free spins trigger?
Some games publish an average trigger rate in their info screen; many do not. Where it is shown, it describes a long-run average, not a schedule.
Is a round more likely after a long wait?
No. Every spin is independent, as our pillar on how slot machines really work explains. A long drought does not bring the feature closer.
Why does the round sometimes pay very little?
Because the feature's average includes many modest rounds alongside a few large ones. A small total is not a sign that anything went wrong.
Long waits for the feature are exactly when sessions tend to overrun, so pick a stopping point beforehand. Slots are for adults, and the rules on online play differ between countries and states.
